In the heart of the Peruvian jungle, where mist intertwines with the tree canopy, we had the privilege of witnessing one of the most fascinating rituals of Andean avifauna: the courtship of the Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus).

The Observation Point

Our hike began at dawn, following a well-preserved ecological trail that winds through a primary cloud forest. The air was fresh and laden with the scent of orchids and moss. After an hour of moderate hiking, we reached the "Lec de los Gallitos", a rocky area where males gather to compete for the attention of females.

Recommended Materials and Preparation

  • Quality binoculars: Essential for appreciating plumage details and behavior without disturbing them.
  • Bird field guide: We recommend one specialized in the Andean and Amazonian region.
  • Neutral-colored clothing: Green, brown, or khaki tones to blend in with the surroundings.
  • Waterproof footwear: Trails can be wet and slippery.
  • Notebook: To record observed species and their characteristics.
  • Silence and patience: The best sightings require stillness and time.

The spectacle lasted approximately forty minutes. The males, with their vibrant orange plumage and disc-shaped crests, performed jumps, bows, and emitted a variety of guttural sounds and whistles. The females, of a discreet reddish-brown color, watched from the highest branches, evaluating the performance of each suitor.

"It's not just about seeing a bird, but understanding its role in the ecosystem. The Cock-of-the-rock is a crucial seed disperser for the regeneration of this forest."
